Comments: Nice hike to this NH 500 Highest Peak.

We jumped on the unposted woods road known as French Hill Extension and started to head northeast/ turning east, about a ½ mile in we ran into a couple guys clearing the over-hanging brush old woods road. Turns out, these guys own a track of land and a couple of hunting cabins further in and we were more that welcome to hike their land. In fact, they invited us to a birthday party at the cabin later in the afternoon.

At roughly a mile from our parking spot we jumped off a well-traveled French Hill Extension and picked up another less traveled and a little overgrown woods road heading north then turning east.

At a half mile or so we crossed a steep drainage ditch and then within 50 yards we picked up an older woods’ road running north on the shoulder of Chickwolnepy Mountain, to this point we basicly followed this same route when we hit Bald mountain a few weeks ago.

After traveling north a few hundred yards on this old wood road we jumped of and started bushwhacking east in nice woods with a couple of scrappy spots at easy / moderate grade heading towards south running ridge of Chickwolnepy Mountain.

Once on the ridge we turned northeast in nice open woods with several small ups and downs we soon hit the recognized high point. After signing in, we followed our step back down the ridge for a bit then dropped off heading southeast towards the col between Chickwolnepy Mountain and Chickwolnepy Mountain – South Peak.

At the col we crossed another overgrown old wood road jumping into some scrappy woods still heading southeast within a 1/3rd of a mile at easy grade we hit the recognized high point. After signing in, we dropped off the summit heading west towards that woods road we just crossed.

We picked up that overgrown woods heading south for a bit, at a folk the road seamed to turn left but a much more used moose path went right so of course we followed it through some muddy / swampy footing. After a short while this herd path popped out onto an old logging landing and a freshly cleared woods road that brought us by one of those hunting cabins, back to the wood’s road woods, back to another nice stop and chat with the guys clearing the road and back to our truck

Once again, a really nice hike in an nice area clocking in just under 7 miles and 1200 feet of elevation gain.
