This was the day after the nor'easter, and it was raining at the outset of our hike at 8 AM. We were suited for rain, and had extra layers and gloves. It was a cold and wet hike, and very well marks with yellow blazes. The trail is the best maintained I have seen, and thank you to those who maintain it! We picked this hike for a cold, wet day, but were surprised to see the rain turn to sleet and then sleet turn to snow. We were the first to the summit (first you summit Starr King, and then go on to Waumbek) and we put our footprints in the new snow for the last 1/3 of the hike.
A trail runner later appeared, who seemed thrilled about the wet sloppy weather, and we were happy to see that!
Only one other couple on the trail, and they were also well prepared for the hike. There was no ice on trail, just some wet snow.
Glad to have brought an extra set of gloves, and planning to carry waterproof gloves from now on! |
