A great 21+ mile loop around Shoal Pond Peak to enjoy the foliage. Two places at a relocation area on the Thoreau Falls Trail gave me pause, but regained the trail soon enough. Also a washout on the same trail, as described in the AMC guidebook, with loose gravel and rocks on a steep descent into the river bed, should be navigated with care. Shoal Pond Trail was scenic, never hard to follow or obscure, a little wet near the pond, and the blowdowns kept things interesting. No problems on the Wilderness Trail, easy to follow and well-marked. A great day hiking alongside the rivers. |
