Comments
Comments: Expected a long and tough day and got it. Busy day on Caps Ridge, lots of people out on a sunny day. Windy at the summit, but not too bad and still reasonably warm. The descent of Sphinx is very tedious, as there is tons of running water on the trail, and even where it is "dry" tons of rocks are wet. Add that to the fact that it is pretty rocky and steep and it is slow going. Nice cascades and interesting views up the headwalls, but not my favorite descent. It was worth it for Six Husbands Trail, which is awesome. If you like strenuous, steep climbs with lots of rock scrambling I'd highly recommend it. It had been sunny and hot on the Gulf floor, but as we climbed the clouds came in. Shortly before we hit Edmands Col Cutoff it started to rain. Visibility soon went to nil. After passing two women descending Six Husbands in the rain (yikes), we hit Gulfside and finally the summit. Briefly lost Dave at the summit of Jefferson (a bit dicey for a few minutes), then headed down. Rain had mostly subsided, but visibility was still really low and the wind had picked up significantly, spurring us on. Broke cloud cover at the last Cap, got fantastic now you see it, now you don't views. Hit the parking lot just as it got dark enough that I was going to stop for a headlamp. Awesome day out, thanks to Dave and Eric for the company. If you want a strenuous, interesting loop in the Presis this is a great hike.
