We don't get many of these days in late September... 50° on the high summits, sunny, almost no wind... It seemed like a shame to waste the day at work so I spent the day doing my first summit of Washington which I've always avoided due to the crowds.
The climb up was amazing, Lion Head definitely made my top 3 list of favorite trails. It reminded me of Airline Trail up Mt Adams after breaking treeline and walking along King's Ravine.
I had to collapse my poles and strap them to my pack for a good portion of the trail so I had both hands free. Great fun and the views were amazing the entire way. The last half mile is a bear climbing up that lovely boulder pile. I do think the rock pile is easier than the one on Adams which has bigger rocks, hence bigger steps and bigger gaps in between to slip into.
I passed a few people about 0.1 mile from the trail head then didn't see another soul until the summit where it was a circus of well over 100 tourists. Definitely a different vibe to the summit than anything else I've climbed. Felt weird taking scenic mountain pictures with parking lots and cars in them.
Couldn't have asked for a better day! Link to video below
