Date of Hike

Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We were the only vehicle at Randolph East when we got there, and only one other vehicle was there when we got back. Appalachia had a lot more cars, but when we drove past it in the afternoon there were some open parking spots in the lot.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossing of Snyder Brook on Randolph Path (which coincides with Brookside for the crossing) was relatively easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Only one fairly small blowdown on the entire route (it was on Beechwood Way). All trails were easy to follow, and all signs were in place. Most of the trails we used were pretty smooth and gradual, with the exception of the much rougher upper section of Short Line. Not much mud on any of the trails despite the rain Saturday night and part of Sunday morning (while we were ascending Randolph Path). A little bit of standing water on upper Short Line, and water was running down King Ravine Trail next to Mossy Fall.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: All the trails we used today would be fine for dogs. However, based on what I've read about King Ravine, probably not the best idea to take a dog into King Ravine above Mossy Fall - all the trails out of the ravine are very difficult.
Bugs
Bugs: Practically none.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nada.

Comments
Comments: Our goal when we pulled into Randolph East at around 9 AM was to hike into King Ravine and go through the Subway. However, dark clouds were overhead, and we knew that if it rained and made the rocks wet, then doing the Subway in those conditions would not be the best idea.

The rain started right about at the junction of Air Line and Randolph Path. It continued for about an hour, and made the rocks (which were already damp from the rain last night) extremely wet and slippery. We decided to turn around at Mossy Fall rather than attempt the Subway in these conditions. Mossy Fall was very nice, and it's clear where it gets its name from.

Since we had some extra time, we decided to spend the afternoon redlining some trails on the lower slopes that we needed. The Randolph Mountain Club really does a great job with their trails - the difference between the popular, heavily eroded Valley Way and Air Line and the smooth, gentle RMC trails was like night and day.
