Comments
Comments: Hiked about 1 mile down French Hill Road extension where we turned left onto a snowmobile/ATV trail. Both trails so far were only slightly grassy. Came to a T intersection in another .6 miles, just west of Chickwolnepy. We took the left fork onto another snowmobile trail which was pretty overgrown with mostly thick grass. Fortunately, an ATV had been through here a few times so the grass was matted down somewhat. At the next T intersection, we followed the road to the right a short ways before taking a heading towards the summit. Lots of thick new growth at first, then as the mountain got steeper, the woods clear a little but there were lots of blowdown areas which made for some interesting climbing. The mountain got steeper the closer we got to the summit. Once we reached the first bump we started angling toward the summit, trying not to lose too much elevation. One last fairly steep climb to a ledgy area, then a gradual climb to the high point which was surrounded by blowdowns. Located the jars (one reassuring us that this was indeed Bald Mountain), and signed in. We took a heading that was more directly to the T intersection which resulted in a ridiculously steep descent, at first down pine covered slopes until we got past the pines and then it was leaves. Finally popped out on an overgrown snowmobile road, slightly NW of the junction. Followed it until we were back on the ATV/snowmobile road and headed for the car.
