After setting up our tent, it was late afternoon. No time for Mrs. Slow to do anything big. So this was just to see how far we could go. The Cut-off was relatively flat, then descended to meet Great Gulf Trail. We checked out the Bluff. Another official site! No platforms, but I think there was a bear box (you may want to verify this before you go). Great view here - you could see the glitter of the sun reflecting off the car windows on the Auto Road. Rather intimidating for a slow hiker to look waaaaaaay up there and wonder "How long will it take?"
Shortly afterwards is the bridge. This is not actually in the Great Gulf Wilderness, so maybe there's hope for when it gets old. The trail hugs the river at this point. It looked very familiar as I have seen it in various YouTube videos. Especially the tentsites at Clam Rock. I was happy to see this is an official site. No platforms, put your tent on the ground. There was a bear box. Depending on how cold the water is, it looked like there were swimming hole options. We continued on to our turn around time, met a NOBO on the way back.
Gorgeous, not particularly difficult (I believe that's further up) trail. Hope to be back! |
