Walked up FR 106, continuing beyond a stream crossing where the nice wide road becomes slightly overgrown. Pleasantly devoid of pricker bushes, this road continues up to a HOL where there is an opening in the woods on the right. This appeared to be an old woods road/snowmobile trail. It drops down slightly as it crosses a stream then climbs through a short section overgrown with tall ferns before opening up again. We followed the trail until we were WSW of the summit. From here, we started bushwhacking towards the summit. Along the way, we spotted a moose, lost her then startled her again and we saw her retreat quickly back down the mountain away from us! We continued up the slope through fairly widely spaced cedars to the highpoint where we spotted the pill jar. After signing in, we followed a herd path down to some ledges with great views then headed straight down coming out on the snowmobile trail just before the ferny section. From there, we followed the same route we had taken on the way up. BTW, lots of logging going here which has opened some great views along the way. Nice hike. |
