Comments
Comments: Great Gulf Trail all the way to the Sphinx junction with a side trip to Osgood Cutoff. Also, did an up and back of Chandler Brook Trail as I passed by. Chandler Brook required extra care due to everything being slick from the early morning rain. Very slow going as it was steep and wet but easy to follow for the most part. Afterwards, I headed up Wamsutta. The small stream crossing in the guide book is completely dry so do not rely on it for water like I did. I was surprised by the few rock scrambles on this trail. One in particular is a definite no fall zone. Easy to follow overall but I would say very difficult in winter if anyone even bothers to attempt it. Loop up and down Washington via Nelson Crag, Tuckerman, Alpine Garden back to Nelson Crag. Maybe it was the 8,100ft. elevation gain for the day getting to me but Nelson Crag seemed relentlessly steep for most of it. Saw a few people playing frisbee and riding a mountain bike all over the vegetation off trail on one of the auto road pulloffs... The trails in the Great Gulf always live up to their reputation. Got out just in time before the lightning showed up.
