A redliners ascent of Jefferson - Caps to The Link over to Castle Ravine Tr and back to the Castle Trail ascended castle to just below Jefferson then Six Husbands to peak then Six Husbands down to Emands Col Cutoff over to The Randolph Path and the Cornice back to Caps. The upper portion of the Link from Caps to the Castle was very wet and lots of ankle busters, after a quick ascent up Caps, our speed the rest of the day was just around 1 mph. There was one part where the trail heads down a slide, watch for the exit. The portion of the Link from Castle to Castle Ravine was a tough drop down the headwall, very slow, combination of poles and hanging onto trees and sliding down rocks to get down. Actually went up faster to get back to the Castle Trail. The Castle Trail to Jefferson was good rock work, steep in places below tree line, then exposed and works it way around the Castles, great views in the Randolph area. Good excuse to stop and catch your breath. Once above tree line, follow the cairns and rock hop to just below the summit.
Took Six Husbands all the down to the Emands Col Cutoff, boulder field just below Gulfside, steep down climb. Emands Col Cutoff, pretty level but rock hopping most of the way until just before Gulfside junction where running water and mud was found, good to know though if you ever need some water up on the ridge. The cornice was a rock hop up and down to the Caps Ridge Trail, follow the cairns. Tough day, 9 miles, 9-1/2 hours, couldn't get a good cadence today but finished up all of the random trails around Jefferson and prepped for my Six Husbands and Butress hike next week. |
