Comments
Comments: trail down low a mish mosh of ski, snowshoe, crampon and boot tracks. pretty much a free for all up through the glades. i went primarily straight up on the ascent where most of the powder had been blown off by skiers. the crust grabbed well with snowshoes. on the descent i more or less followed the trail proper taking advantage of the switchbacks and new powder in sections missed by the skiers. broke out the section of trail between the glades and lookout spur through 8+ inches of snow with some deeper drifts. once at the viewpoint spur the trail had been packed by skiers. i opted to not search around for the entrance to the rim trail and instead headed over to the ski trails and followed them a short distance to the summit. enough snow on the tower steps to snowshoe to the top.
wore snowshoes the whole hike. some may want crampons for the glade section.
decided on a shorter hike for today and this was a nice choice. winds were milder than i expected making the open sections of trail relatively pleasant on what was a beautiful day. still more of a mid winter rather than a spring feeling in the mountains. great to be out.
