An interesting route to this peak. You descend gradually quite a bit on the "ascent", then shoot somewhat steeply up to the outlook which has okay views to Kearsarge, Cardigan and Ragged. Like a lot of SPNHF properties, the route here follows old logging roads through logged areas.
The trail officially ends at the outlook, but I kept following the woods road that the trail uses to just below the summit, where an obscure herd path led up to the wooded high point, marked by an old cairn.
I turned this into a loop by continuing along the woods road, immediately entering private property. This was signed as requiring permission for wheeled vehicles, but did not explicitly prohibit foot traffic. Beyond this point the whole area has been extensively logged and has lots of slash and lousy footing. I followed old logging roads slowly curving northeast, passed through a large clearcut, then bushwhacked in wide open woods back to the trail. |
