Appalachian Trail drying up quite well after this week's rain. Followed it to the spur trail for the shelter which we then followed to a muddy crossing about 100 yds. before the shelter. This crossing appeared to be an old woods road which was on our map and would take us to a spot closer to the mountain for the start of our bushwhack. Followed the faint road about .3 - .4 mile at which point we lost it but realized we were at a good point to start heading to the summit. The remainder of the bushwhack was through clear woods and up a gradual climb. There were only two short steep climbs up some mossy rock scrambles. On the way we actually saw an old DMC/AT blaze! At the height of land we came upon some yellow blazes and AT corridor signs so we knew were close. Looked all over for a jar and finally located a string which we figured had held a jar at some point. We hung a new jar with register for future peak baggers. We descended pretty much the same way down to the spur trail. Perfect weather day! Fun bushwhack! |
