 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Gorgeous updates to Chmpney Bolles lot. Nice new bathroom, with gravel trail leading to it. The volunteer program is there early in the day, great folks volunteering to help others have a safe hike. God, I wish I could retire, move up, and do this! |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Lost count! None difficult, but could be if the water levels are high. A few are bridged, because this sometimes merges with the snowmobile trail. |

 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
A few blowdowns. A few on the way up from the Kanc seem to have been worked on in the past. Thank you! No blazes in this section, a few blazes between height of land and trail junction for Bee Line. A few areas are brushy going up to height of land. Ancient remnants of logs used for watery trails are there in a few places. A lot of wood and boards on the side closer to Bee Line, but I think that's from the snowmobilers. |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Should be fun! |

 | Bugs: |
Put my earthy crunchy stuff away and stopped to buy 98% DEET, until this season is over. Between that, some rain, and having Prema nearby (they LOVE her!) I was relatively unbothered. Lady at the volunteer tent said they were bad. |

Red line hike. Sounded like a good choice for a day that offered possibilities of thunder, hail, etc... For some, this may have seemed like something boring to get out of the way, but I loved it. There were a few late blooming lady slippers, beautiful woods, and fun water crossings (ever cross the same damn brook more than ten times? Oh yeah, up the road is Downes, maybe we'll do that next!). Shortly into the hike, there was a cut stump left over from a dispatched blowdown. Someone had written their initials, age (76), and 47 years roaming these hills. Whoever you are, you've had a good life!
No blazes from the Kanc to height of land. Path is very straightforward for the most part, but at some of the water crossings, you are actually in the brook for a few minutes and may wonder where the path went. Just pay attention, you'll be o.k.
Hike changes after all this water, becomes a dry ascent to the height of land (a beautiful flat area) and then down again to more water. At this point the sun was in and out and we were debating doing the part of the Bee Line going toward Paugus (Chocorua would have been too much as I had work the next day). Then the sky turned very dark, rain started and thunder as well. So we stopped at the trail junction and turned back. Upon returning, when you go through a very wet area, you may notice the snowmobile sign to the far right. Stay to the left.
This is a good hike for history buffs. After descending height of land, there is a small clearing full of ferns. There are artifacts here (sled runner, machinery, etc). Right before the trail junction is one of those old telephone wires with the white porcelain thing on it. |
