I made my second visit to Guinea Hill last weekend. After excursion day before to Cape Horn I needed something easy to do. I went to hunt for east end of North Road, cellar holes, and stone walls of which I found many. I started from new TH parking lot for Chapman Bird Sanctuary off Mount Israel Road. Stonewall mapper showed me where the cellar holes and roads were and this time I found most of them. I found the cellar hole south of G Hill summit and then went up to the summit. The area around summit appears to have experienced two rounds of clearing and succession. First after hill farms were abandoned after 1850 when Sandwich Notch farms were abandoned. Second was when north west slope was logged who knows when maybe 30 or 40 years ago? Guinea Hill must have had tremendous view of Sandwich and Israel summits when it was cleared. I’d like to go back when the leaves are down in the fall when leaves are down for views of these peaks. I just received a copy of Brown’s photo book of Lost Hill Farms of NW Kingdom of VT. What a treasure of photos of the last hill top farms of VT. One of the C holes I found has very much intact well. I did make a point of walking the walls and circling the holes so I have pretty good GPS track evidence of many walls and C holes. I noticed many walls run N-S magnetic bearing. |
