Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, June 24, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked in lot; maybe a dozen cars when I started (7 am) and about the same when I finished (5pm).
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Bridges or easy stepovers. Presumably the bridge is still out on the Cog connector, but I did see 3 or 4 people come in at the junction that way.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Some blowdowns on Jewell. All easy stepovers although one up near alpine zone was a bit trickier and was more of an obstacle.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: They were out and biting but not as bad as some reports indicate. Bug spray was enough to keep them at bay. Hardly any above treeline, thanks to the breeze.

Comments
Comments: I had been up Jewell in 2012 but got a ride down. Seemed a bit rockier and rootier at the bottom than I recall - erosion, perhaps? I also struggled following the cairns on upper Jewell; I did not remember having so much trouble the first time. Pretty sure I ended up on several mini bushwhacks on that pile of rocks. Maybe some got knocked down over the winter? Higher up was pretty much dry and very pleasant. Cog trail has a lot of loose rock and the sun in your face all the way down. I accidentally took Westside at one point and had to backtrack to Gulfside. Not that busy at the summit at 1pm, but it was a Monday, not a weekend.
