Lower Jewell to the second outlook has some gnarly postholes some hip deep. The snow today was stable and many people were coming off the hill in their crampons and spikes not switching to snowshoes and it did not seem that the soft snow was giving way. If it gets warm again snowshoes would be the better alternative to treeline. At tree line some people were wearing spikes but most people crampons. (Thanks to Bob who was wearing spikes and loaned me a crampon when one of mine broke). More exposed rock than I expected but several areas where one would not want to fall om steep crusted snow. I carried my ax and broke it out though it was not necessary. Great to see Eric today after completing the Grid with Sabrina and Tim. A perfect Jefferson day and great end of winter day. |
