Trails
Trails: Livermore Trail, Mt. Tripyramid Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, June 17, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There was probably about a half dozen other cars there when I arrived just past 2pm. When I returned only two cars were left. Room for many more.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Not an issue. Most of the crossings are on the descent of the south slide (after the actual slide part). Most are a pretty small rock hop.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One large straddler blowdown on the Mount Tripyramid Trail shortly before you actually start ascending the north slide. I’m sure there were a few others but I can’t recall anything in particular. Given all the herd paths in the woods, it’s hard to know if you’re truly on the trail that ascends the north slide because there are virtually no blazes and the herd paths occassionally look like the actual trail. I consulted Gaia but it’s route was off a bit. If redlining, my suggestion is just to stay on the slide the entire time from the moment you hit the real rocky parts down low all the way to the top where you go back into the woods. Nearing the top, there’s a cairn on the left. As I had very rarely seen any blazes (and what there were were very very faded) or cairns, I aimed for it but it wound up directing me to this sort of “sub-slide” to the left that enters the woods sooner...but there’s no trail opening there. Stay to the right (the main larger slide) and the trail goes into the woods shortly.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I don’t think dogs could handle the north slide. Nor could most handle the south slide. Nor could many humans safely!
Bugs
Bugs: The black flies were horrendous. They were worst on the slide of course because I slowed way down.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: I’d originally planned a grand route up to Washington for today, but I ended up working in the morning so I decided to do this instead and get some new redlining miles in and the Tripyramids in a new month for my grid :) So glad I got out and did this!

The views were great from the slides and the viewpoints near the peaks. Although the Tripyramids don’t have open summits, if you visit the two or three viewpoints up there (let alone the slides) you really get a look at a great many White Mountain peaks!!

As noted above, there’s hardly any blaze indicating where the trail is on north slide. I lucked out and the north slide was mostly dry. I was impressed at how dry the trails were. No mud on Livermore or north slide. There was a little bit on the ridge but it was mostly dried out very nicely. Only place that it hadn’t was right at the jct of Mt Tripyramid Trail with the tiny little side path to the true summit. There was also significant mud below the south slide. That said, below the slide, that trail is pretty gradual with good footing making for a very nice descent :)

The highlight of my hike was meeting Steve Smith on my way out Livermore Road and getting to talk with him on his way out. Thanks for the wonderful conversation and all you do for us White Mountain hikers Steve (his trail report: http://mountainwandering.blogspot.com/2019/06/tripyramids-61719.html?m=1)
