Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Initially I was going to ascend Mt Osceola from Tripoli Road. When I arrived the small lot was full and the cars were parked for quite some distance along the edge of the road. I changed plans and headed for the Livermore WMNF parking (fee lot)where there was plenty of space at 9:00AM.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Crossing of Mad River was an easy rock hop
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in good condition except for the mud section on Greeley Ponds trail near lower Greeley Pond and the ridge between East Osceola and Osceola. Either bog bridges or stepping stones would preserve the pathway and prevent bypass routes (as noted by K Mo).Met some men performing trail work today. On my return from East Osceola to Mad River valley I saw that many trees had been sawed. The cutting may have been more aggressive than required for clear passage. Perhaps there was another criteria for selecting the trees to cut. There is a washed out area on the Greeley Ponds trail between the ponds but the footing is fine.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw many dogs. Dogs would need to be comfortable on steep slopes on the ascent to East Osceola and at the chimney between the Osceolas.
Bugs
Bugs: Many black flies at lower elevation especially around the Greeley Ponds.

Comments
Comments: The change in plans due to the parking situation actually worked out fine. I had not been at the southern end of Greeley Ponds Trail since the relocation necessitated by the storm damage by Irene in 2011. Much of the distance on the Greeley Ponds trail is a smooth surface with not much rockiness. The views of the ponds and from the shore of the ponds are beautiful.
On Mt Osceola the most expansive views are from a rock on a side path leading north from an old fire tower site. Most hikers pass by this viewpoint. There is also a nice viewpoint between the col and East Osceola.
Saw many Lady Slippers, Bunchberries, and Blue Bead Lilies in bloom.
Lots of hikers including kids. Nice to meet K Mo who had already hiked the Hancocks.
