Comments
Comments: All the reviews I read prepared me for a long, fairly-level hike. And on that account they were spot on. What I didn't count on was the mud - lots of it - and the water crossings. I brought cheap water shoes and they were well worth the money. In fact, I kept the one for long stretches of the Lincoln Brook trail which were very muddy. Compared to most other mountains, Owl's Head feels like it lacks signage. The turnoff for the proper ascent was a small, disheveled cairn I could have easily walked passed if I wasn't specifically looking for it. A "WARNING - Active Bears in Area" sign posted on a nearby tree marked it as legit. The ascent up the rock slide is steep and loose. Take your time coming down. It's a loooong way back to civilization and the black flies will finish you off if your twist ankle.
