Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: You will definitely get your feet wet on the crossings of Liberty & Lincoln Brooks. (We did the Black Pond bushwhack so did only the upper crossings.) On the Lincoln Brook crossing, we went upstream a bit, where the water was not as deep and fast moving.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The hydro-engineer and I unclogged over a dozen drainages/waterbars on Lincoln Brook Trail. Also took care of a pesky blowdown that was in the way. Lots of new branches, trees, & detritus on Owls Head ridge from recent wind events.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies have hatched. Most problematic on BP bushwhack coming out. Before & after that section we were faster than them.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found: knife, 1/2 trekking pole, garbage bag, socks. Packed all out. Lost: Lincoln Brook snatched one of my Black Diamond poles out of my hand. Then... it was gone!! :(

Comments
Comments: Figured today was as good as any to hike Owlie in May. River water levels were manageable, but as mentioned above your feet will get wet. Poles are very helpful. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a good grip on mine, and one went floating down the river. :D

Didn’t see any snow until about 3500 feet. It was on and off to the ridge, then snow about 50% of the time
on the ridge itself. We wore light traction, but you could get by without.

We saw and heard a barred *OWL* near Black Pond on our way out! That was cool. Also fresh moose prints
