Old bridle is snow free up to 3400 ft,then snow covered with minor monorail...did not feel the need to use traction. From hut to Lafayette has spotty snow cover off and on...still did not feel the need to use traction. Ridge is snow free. As soon as we got off Haystack we hit a stable monorail where we felt MicroSpikes were essential. We kept them up to the sharp right turn with the small cascade. All the waterfalls were magnificent.
Descending Falling Waters early afternoon we were amazed how ill-prepared many were with sneakers, cotton and no traction. We had a couple groups asked us how much further was the Hut...LOL. We warned folks about the onset of steady snow/ice as they hiked up Falling Waters. When we finished at 3PM, the WMNF forest volunteers were gone. I'm not sure how long they stay but it seems to me they should probably set up a bit later and stay later. We found the hikers they were greeting at 8AM were actually the ones who were prepared versus the ones starting later in the day were not.
