 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Oh my.... ANYWAY, Carter-Gibbs Trail was well-marked and well-blazed. Quite a few times I lost the blazes but it was just a matter of going back to the last blaze and looking around. Massive deadfall on the trail - i kicked off what I could but, in general, there is a continuous carpet of leg-grabbing twigs and bigger branches. This trail does not get much use so there is very little evidence of any footbed - the blazes are your primary guide. Once over the col between Oregon and Mowglis, there is a large slippery slab with a rope assist - it was pretty solid but did show some fraying - glad that was there because bypasses didn't look all that great as options. Elwell was similar in terms of blowdowns and deadfall. I only went on a portion of Elwell East (east side of Old Dicey Rd) although I believe that the trail marker near Oregon labels that section as Elwell West. I believe the old sign at the 3-way junction of Carter Gibbs and Elwell is missing - there is a newer trail marker but it only lists CARTER-GIBBS TRAIL with no other trail names but points in 2 directions (not 3 when this is actually a 3-way intersection) |

Lost my phone on a logging/skidder road near the Elwell East/West and Old Dicey Road area then spent a half-hour to an hour looking for it but finally found it - YAY |

I really enjoy this area. It's always an adventure and so totally wild it's amazing. I should have worn gaiters, though. Love love LOVE the cascades on the Carter-Gibbs Trail!!!! However, it was quite tiring and not a fast hike because I did have to look to find the trail, re-find my phone, etc. I wasn't going for speed records as I'm still trying to heal an earlier injury (smashed my knee) from falling through the snow on snowshoes on Mt Carr a few weeks back.... d'oh!!!! I went to the major viewpoint east of Oregon - what a vast sea of changing springtime color - that's just one of my favorite viewpoints!!!! Perfect lunch spot!!! |
