Comments
Comments: The first mile of Imp was wet leaves, which turned to water on the trail and rocks below 2800 feet. Patches of snow started to show up after 2800, but it was inconsistent. Here the trail was like a brook, with the water running under the patches of monorail at times. At ~4000 feet the snow cover was more consistent and soon got deeper, also meaning a battle of branches to get to the ridge. Post-holing was an issue, snowshoes were on briefly, but intermittently I would hit 100-200' of bare rock to walk over, so I ended up in spikes despite the fact that shoes would've been better at times.
The monorail along the ridge was narrow and unstable, and snow surrounding was soft. That, combined with a good number of blowdowns and branches to work through made slow work. Zeta pass was tricky to find, but reachable. Descending Carter Dome to the hut was more of the same, but the sun was more present on this side, making the trail frequently switch between patches of snow to just rocks. NMB from the hut was snowy for the first mile or so going out. Then graciously became rock/root/soil, some mud but mostly dry.
