Nice hike / bushwhack to this New Hampshire 2000-Footer / New Hampshire 500 Highest Peak.
From our parking location we took a woods road heading northwest, instantly picked up older wood’s road heading west, followed it and popped out on another wood’s road running southwest through a small field. On the other side of that field we picked up an old trail heading northwest running parallel with a stream at moderate grade.
Once this leveled off, we crossed the stream and started bushwhacking west up a drainage area that popped us onto another old wood’s road turning us southwest in an area that had lots of moose activity. We followed that for bit until it just started heading away from our destination. At that point we started bushwhacking west, then northwest in nice woods, mostly moderate grade with some steep pitches here and there, some ups and downs towards the summit.
Once at the summit we realized like a few others before us that we hit the wrong mountain or bump along this long series of mountains know as Gardner Ridge. This was a first, the one we’re looking for was about a mile to the southwest. That said we dropped off this bump heading southwest into the col that had previously been logged and started climbing and soon hit the true recognized high point and summit jar.
After signing in we dropped back to that col and followed the drainage east down rather than climbing over the false bump. We then picked up several old woods, logging roads, some good bushwhacking turning us northeast and soon picked up one of that wood’s roads with that moose activity that brought us back to our parking location.
Nice hike clocking in just under 6 miles and 2000 feet of elevation gain +/-
