The trails were pretty dry with some standing water in places, so there were some blackflies in the lower elevation forests but the breeze on the ridge kept them at bay. |

Parked on Reservation Road at the North Mountain Trailhead. There is offroad parking for about 10 cars right by an old house/barn foundation and cellar hole.
Hiked North Mountain in a clockwise loop of North Mountain Trail, Boulder Trail, North Mountain Bypass back to North Mountain Trail. I decided on the clockwise direction based on the steep part of the climb was near the beginning. North Mountain is actually a beautiful ridge about a mile long, beautiful views all along the ridge. The loop is about 5.2 miles, 1,000 ft gain, and about 2.5 hours. I started at about noon and the weather was perfect, first sunny day for awhile, and high 60s temp with a slight breeze. There were a few blackflies when in the woods but were soon non-existent when climbing to the ridge. The trails are marked clearly by white diamond markers nailed to numerous trees along the way. A couple of trail junctions are a little confusing because there are snowmobile trails cutting through the park so it's best to have a phone with a trail map and GPS.
This was actually one of the prettiest trails I've ever been on. There were pine forests, open ridge walking, huge boulder fields, and lots of rock outcroppings. Highly recommended! |
