| Comments: |
The lower section of Gorge Brook Trail was a mix of bare wet trail and snow/frozen slush. The Gorge Brook Trail was mainly a stable monorail from just before the first bridge over Gorge Brook up to the bare summit ledges with a few bare spots here and there. The monorail was generally wide enough to allow for easy walking with only a few thin spots. The ridge between Mt Moosilauke and South Peak was either bare surfaces or a hardpacked monorail sometimes below the crest of the snowpack. Below the junction with the Glencliff Trail, the Moosilauke Carriage Road did not have a clearly defined monorail. Nevertheless it was easy to find solid footing which prevented any postholing. The Snapper Trail had both a stable and deteriorating monorail. I carried my snowshoes but did not use them as I did not post hole. MicroSpikes provided enough traction.
By the time I arrived at South Peak I could see the summit of Mt Washington and Camel's Hump in Vt. Many hikers on the trail. Most ascended via Gorge Brook. Two hikers came up Beaver Brook (reportedly treacherous footing but the cascades were flowing)and one hiker came up Glencliff Trail. |
