This is a really, really cool area, and not at all what I pictured. The trail is only 0.4 mi. and is on bog bridges the whole way, some of which were just below the water. Also, slippery.
The first half is a neat, narrow corridor through an Atlantic Cedar swamp and the second half becomes more shrubby, ending at an elevated observation deck with views out over the bog, which is surrounded by Lovewell Mountain, Avery Hill, Haystack Mountain and Pickett Hill. I met some locals who suggested I return in about a month when the flowers are out.
On the way out, I explored what looked like an abandoned section of trail until it got too wet. Use caution here as the old bog bridges are not affixed to anything. No idea where this trail goes. I did notice another trailhead further south on East Washington Road that looked lesser-used, so maybe there? |
