Comments: Mount Cilley is on the New Hampshire 2000-Footer & 500 Highest Lists.

From our parking location with a few snow flurries falling we put on our micro spikes and walked south on the gated Elbow Pond Road down to Elbow Pond. At this point we jumped off the road and started bushwhacking east and started gaining elevation at moderate grade in open woods.

We stopped to dress down and there it was, Mary found the first moose antler of the year. After strapping on the antler to Mary’s pack, we turned north on an old woods road for a bit then jumped off that turning northeast still at moderate grade and nice woods. We were circling around to the back side of the peak to avoid the steeps.

Of course, on the way Mary found a moose rib bone to add to the antler she found earlier and the other moose bones she found yesterday on rainy-day hike to Mount Cilley – Northwest Peak.

We now turned east as we headed toward the peanut shaped summit in search of the recognized high point. We hit the western end first, we hit all high points along the way looking for the summit jar, checking the altimeter on each until we hit the eastern end. We did not find a jar, but we determined with the altimeter that the recognized high point is in on of the middle bumps as it was 15 to 30 feet higher in elevation. Unfortunately, we didn’t have another summit jar kit with us as we placed the only one, we had yesterday over at Mount Cilley – Northwest Peak.

On our return trip we skirted around the north side of the summit avoiding the bumps and then drop down the steeps heading towards Elbow Pond and an easy enough road walk back to the truck camper.

Another great adventure with my beautiful bride clocking in 5.5 miles and 1000 feet of elevation gain.
