Bottom of trail is snow free but very wet. Tromped through the puddles at the bottom and then walked straight through the running water for the first .5 mile. After the first half mile, small ice patches made themselves known. I skirted around most of them (left spikes at car in favor of Dions), but they would've been helpful. The ice continued up the middle of the trail until ~3,000'/1.3 miles, where the conifer forest begins. From this point on there was a fairly stable monorail that I was able to navigate sans snowshoes or spikes to the summit of Starr King.
At Starr King the deluge began. Jogged to Waumbek across the narrow monorail along the ridge. I went through a couple of times, but that's to be expected this time of year. Saw a couple on the summit of Waumbek who seemed to be having as much fun as I was, so we go out of there quickly.
I'd recommend all of the traction and footwear for the next few weeks. Spikes will be the name of the game shortly, but snowshoes could help for another couple of weeks. Dont expect dry feet. |
