Cobble Hill is on the New Hampshire 2000-Footer & New Hampshire 500 Highest list.
A few weeks back we had planned of hitting Cobble Hill after summiting moody Ledge but called it a day after ending up with a back issue. That said we’re back to finish what we started.
With no snow in sight we strapped on our snowshoes to our backpacks and started bare-booting north on Cobble Hill Trail and then straight onto Dearth Brook Trail on bar ground. Our plan was to follow these trails past the col between Moody Ledge and Cobble Hill then circle around to the northern ridge of Cobble, summit, continue down the southern ridge and then turn southwest picking up the trail we came in on.
The nice thing about bushwhacking is you can really make your own trail any time you want to. That said after a couple of miles hiking and just before the col we looked to our east and saw the south side of Cobble and it’s running ridge line was snow free and nice open woods, so we changed our plan and headed towards the ridge. Once at the ridge we turned north still in nice woods.
We really didn’t see any snow until maybe about 2200 elevation and even then, it was easy bare-booting to the recognized summit register and then to the second summit register. We signed in a both location but noted the southern register was higher on our altimeter.
The snow got deeper, and we strapped on our snowshoes and did a little looking around as we noticed lots of moose activity on the northern end. After having enough snowshoeing this winter we turned and headed south, skirted west of the summit and then followed the southern ridge down past where we came up checking out that area, turned west dropping a few hundred feet of elevation and picked up what maybe an old Cobble Hill Trail or old woods road heading south, turning east and then south again and then running into Brill Rd or another woods road heading east that brought us back to the trail we came in on and back to the trail head.
Nice hike clocking in 6.5 miles, 1500 feet of elevation gain +/-
