Peaks Square Ledge, NH
Trails
Trails: Direttesima, road walk, Square Ledge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, April 13, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I parked at Glen Ellis Falls trailhead. It’s plowed to the gate. Probably a half dozen to a dozen cars when I got there around 3ish. No issues getting in or out; dry pavement. It was a little tight getting out though. Only a few cars left upon my return.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossing near the Pinkham visitor side on the Direttesima that’s bridged was kind of sketchy because the bridge was (mostly) clear of snow but the trail next to it wasn’t which made it difficult to get down to. Combine that with the fact that it’s only a one-railed bridge and its a long drop below to the falls, if makes it unnerving. I feel like there might have been another crossing or two I’m forgetting about but they couldn’t have been that hard if I forget!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Yellow blaze on the Diretessima which was frequent enough. Still not obvious and I had to occasionally look for the next blaze though. Some duck unders but nothing too bad. No blaze on Square Ledge but still easy to follow (follow the postholes!!)
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: There’s some sketchy areas on the Direttesima that might not be great for them (or you!) but Square Ledge would be fine. None seen.
Bugs
Bugs: I don’t recall seeing any but there have been some out up north for sure.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: Snowshoes needed on both trails particularly the Direttesima which hadn’t been travelled recently. The Direttesima has some sketchy sidehill section in addition to the sketchy bridge crossings menrioned above. It’s also a bit hard to follow. I wouldn’t recommend it for most until most of the snow melts.

Square Ledge was badly postholed but less so as you approached the ledges. On the “V-shaped” chute or however the guidebook describes it, it’s really just a rock staircase with some water running next to it. For this brief section all the snow had melted and the rocks on the left side were mostly dry. I took my snowshoes off and left them there for this part. It had gotten very windy when I left the top around 5 or 6.
