I did Surprise the other day, but wasn't on trail early enough to make a meaningful bid on Moriah. Oh well, come back today. Almost identical perfect conditions. The snow is indeed becoming mashed potatoes, but with snowshoes or long crampons, you'll be fine. I did Hillsounds for the first mile, but as it got steeper, I swapped into snowshoes, and made better headway.
Near the top, those not wearing snowshoes may run into problems with post-holing all the way to China. If you're particularly unlucky, you'll post-hole into the belly of a Sarlacc. So take care -- the monorail isn't always easily seen where the wind can tug at footprints, and stepping off to the side is hazardous.
Trees were dry -- no snow or other wet stuff. No pretty icicles, either, though, so that was sub-optimal. But it does mean dry travel. |
