Peaks
Peaks North Tripyramid, Middle Tripyramid, NH
Trails
Trails: Pine Bend Brook Trail, Mt. Tripyramid Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, April 12, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: It is now possible to park safely on the usual winter-parking area across from the TH although it is not really plowed out. One set of wheels in the snow means it is possible to get the vehicle inside the white line.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Some are still bridged and some have open water but water-levels are low. No difficulties anywhere but a few steps on rocks and in water are necessary.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few blowdowns high up but hard to judge if any of these will be a problem when the snow is gone.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Roxie did well and had no issues anywhere - even with our "improvisations" (see below). Snow is holding relatively firm even off the trail but the soft snow conditions is tiring.

Comments
Comments: The trail was tracked out (we guess yesterday) by snowshoers until about half-way up the steep section (approx. 1/2 mile before gaining the ridge). After that there was absolutely no visible sign of prior travel on these trails. Trail-breaking modest in 2-6" but conditions getting softer throughout the day.

We lost the trail shortly after gaining the ridge and again on the final ascent to North Tripyramid but this second variation allowed us to enjoy some unusual views before connecting with the proper trail again. Snowbase is quite firm and there was no difference in "feel" whether on the trail or not. Another party behind us (we heard them but never saw them as they appeared to have turned around on the North Peak) did a better job navigating and we followed their tracks down. Stay left wherever the tracks split (ascending). Between North and Middle we were pretty close to the trail all the way - but not 100%.

The trail-signs at the jcts. with Scaur, Mt. Tripyramid (North slide) and Sabbaday Brook trs are all completely buried.

Snowshoes door to door.
