Comments
Comments: Nice day out for a hike of the Hancock loop. Up North, down South. Looks like we got a few inches of fresh powder over the last day, and this was layered atop another inch or so of fresh snow with a breakable crust. I broke trail for the loop as nobody had hiked this in the past few days I don't think. Wore spikes from the trailhead until after the last water crossing, then switched to snowshoes for the ascent up North, and between the peaks over to South. Once at South, I switched back to spikes for the hike/slide down the south trail. Route finding between the peaks was not too too bad, the trough was visible in the bushier sections, though I used GPS a number of times to try to break a decent trail that's true to the actual, you know, trail. Apologies for a few small step retraces, if you happen to follow my tracks. Sign near North summit is practically buried, and the drifts over near South are insane ... the best views of the day were from South looking east and north, from the large drifts just before the summit. Grey jays were around as usual. South slide trail was not very buttslideable due to the new snow, although I managed to get some speed in a few places. Back down on the Hancock Notch Tr, the sun was warming up the snow and sticking to everything, I just ended up barebooting back to the trailhead. Still a good hardpack underneath and no postholing.
