Only open crossings were the bottom two on Bondcliff Trail. Took the brook bed from #4 to #3. |

Packed trail from US 302 to the hut. Snowshoes needed for floatation beyond Hale Brook parking lot. No recent tracks beyond .25 miles above the hut. We broke from there to the Bondcliff col. Generally 6-12" of new snow with lots of deeper drifts. Trail finding certainly an issue between hut and Mt. Bond with some very deep snow. Our tracks meander off the trail once or twice on either side of Zealand Mountain, but not by much...everything else should be kosher, though it was drifting in. The scrambles before Zealand Mountain were fairly filled in with snow, but still steep. Bondcliff Ridge fairly bare. Light traction a good idea, as there is one icy section behind it with a very bad fall zone below it. Beyond Bondcliff, the scramble ledge was fairly well filled in with a footbed zigzagging up it. Lower Bondcliff Trail, as well as Wilderness Trail and inconsistent footing, due in part to the crust that was broken through. Much better footing starting at Black Pond Trail junction. |
