Unfortunately this route has been beaten up by parasitic postholers over the past few days.
I barebooted the first quarter of a mile, as the logging road is mud/slush/ice while the fields are half bare. Snowshoes went on just after the Hurricane Trail junction/water crossing and stayed on up to the Carriage Road.
The initial stretch of trail has snow/ice that's maybe 6 to 12 inches deep with bare ground on the sides. As soon as the trail starts to traverse, there is full snowpack and depth quickly increases to perhaps 3 feet. A few areas of monorail. As the trail steepens, the postholes quickly multiply, both from the weekend and today. The last stretch was pretty nasty from the postholes (snow had set up tonight, so they were firm), to the point in which I had to boot this part for the descent because it was too dangerous in snowshoes.
Lots of postholes along the Carriage Road as well. There are some drifts that are probably 8 feet deep, where the footbed is off trail in the treetops.
Above treeline, there is a snowfield followed by fairly consistent blue ice on trail all the way to the summit. It was firm this evening, so my Microspikes were overmatched. Crampons wouldn't be overkill on this stretch until it softens up. |
