We started heading north up Cobble Hill Trail with micro-spikes strapped on and soon switched to snowshoes as the snow on the trail was getting a little sloppy due to the raising temperature. At roughly 1 mile we decided to start bushwhacking northwest towards Moody Ledge’s southern running ridge and a sub-peak. Stepping off the trail immediately justified using snowshoes as we started punching threw about 8†+/-.
We started see signs of deer and moose activity. Grade was relatively moderate and open to start, then we leveled off for a bit with wide views in all direction as we now started punching through at depts of 12†to 18â€. Once beyond things got a steeper, woods tightened up a bit but never too bad and soon we hit the sub-peak and found an old lean-to shelter. This area had lots of recent moose activity. We continued north following the ridge and soon hit the recognized high point and signed in.
At this point it was Mary’s turn to lead as we headed east dropping off the mountain towards the col between us and our next destination Cobble Hill. We started in nice woods dropping pretty quick, snowshoe post-holing anywhere from 18 to 24 inches and a couple of spruce traps here and there. At some point Mary tweaked her back from a sudden drop and that slowed things down. After nagging her she allowed me to throw her backpack onto my backpack take the weight off her. Once leveled off we hit a patch of thick woods, the kind you’ve got to squeeze through, and soon enough things opened up with tons of old and new moose activity. We were still punching down in anywhere 12 to 24 inches of snow and soon hit Cobble Hill Trail.
This trail is more like and old woods road that had so many moose tracks on it there must have been a moose parade. Now Cobble Hill was only another 600 ft +/- of elevation gain and ½ to ¾ of mile the way I convinced Mary due to her back issue to save it for another day and we headed south back to the truck.
Another great adventure with my beautiful bride clocking in 5.5 miles and 1500 ft of elevation gain +/-
