As many know , spring conditions and weather will change the trails dramatically. Zealand Road was down to tar until the sugarloaf campground where we encountered slushy snow and some ice ,bare boots or microspikes were fine. Hale brook was best with snow shoes , the trail went side ways at some points making it a bit difficult. Lend a Hand was partially broken out by skiers, one track of snow shoes on some parts of it, a few post holes, snow shoe post holes,Bear prints ( what we thought but it was really a big dog named Moose ) snow was hard and crunchy and difficult to break out . At the Z hut we stopped in and met the caretaker ,Pat and had a nice chat. Zealand trail, we switched to microspikes as it was hard packed and made a swift decent to the road, the day was dry and a few glimpses of sun, Hale was a perfect choice for this cloudy day.We also met Glenn later in the day from the Forest service , he told us the story of how the Zealand bridge was built!! Thank you JS for a great day out and congratulations on #20 toward your 48s .Happy Hiking!! |
