Beautiful clear day with very little wind. In the morning it was all frozen, but on the way back the lower parts of the trail were starting to melt a bit. I wore micro spikes up to where Lion's Head starts climbing, then crampons all the way to the top. The flat part after Lion's Head was pretty much bare rock. Crust, deeper snow, followed by plenty of ice on the cone, some snow, and some bare rock. Same setup on the way back, at times the ice axe was more or less needed on the steeper parts of Lion's. |
