Ravine Lodge Road was frozen solid this morning making for quick walking. We were able to bareboot the road without issue. There were a few stretches of icy road to negotiate. Once at the lodge we put on spikes. Trail was well packed until we hit the Gorge Brook Trail split. After that the Snapper Trail had seen much less use and was very soft. We switched to snowshoes here and left them on for the rest of the day. Carriage Road was packed by ski traffic but still soft in spots that were in full sun. Deep snowpack on the ridge as the trail makes its way up and over many deep drifts between the South Peak and the Main Peak. Getting off trail here without snowshoes would be awful. Once above the scrub the trail was mixed snow, rock and ice. I was able to make my way up in snowshoes but a few areas were a bit boney. Great views from the summit stretching across the Whites as well as into Vermont and I believe some of the peaks in the Adirondacks. The walk was uneventful with the snow getting sticky in the afternoon sun. Ravine Lodge Road was getting muddy this afternoon. |
