Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: At the end of Carter Mountain Road where it turns to a unmaintained class 6 road there's a area for a few cars. That said it hadn't been plowed and had a small snow pile in front of it and although I've got a 4-wheel drive truck I wasn't interested in getting stuck and having Mary push me out (hahaha) so I parked a few hundred yard prior to it out of the way.

Comments: unmaintained class 6 Carter Mountain Road now snowmobile trail, woods roads, bushwhack

This peak is on the New Hampshire 2000-Footer & New Hampshire 500 Highest lists. From our parking location we strapped on our snow shoes and setoff east on the unmaintained class 6 Carter Mountain Road that’s presently used for snowmobiles for about ¾ of a mile.

We turned southeast going through a clearing following an older woods road and after a few hundred yards or so we came across a much older woods road (turning us south) with a chain with PVC pipe sleeved over it and signage stating something like - no unauthorized motor vehicles.

At this point the hard-packed snowmobile tracks had gone away and we started post-holing in our snowshoes. Soon enough this older woods road faded away and we continued bushwhacking south at moderate grade with a few steeper pitches here and there in nice open woods.

Once on the summit we hit all the highpoints, checked out the cabin with great views towards the east.

Nice hike clocking in just under 4 miles, 1350 feet of elevation gain, lots of cold wind and still a good 3 + feet of snow.
