An afternoon hike up Ammo to Monroe for Heather's SSW 48 finish! Great perseverance all winter long to do this, with not a lot of available days at times to hike. Congrats, Heather!! We used snowshoes up to the hut for the televators. Ammo was hard-packed snow and light traction would suffice but we appreciated the televators for the steep climb. Put on crampons at the hut for Monroe and then kept them on all the way down. Heather descended most of the way down from the hut with microspikes. Patchy ice and snow above treeline, but crampons felt perfect for Monroe. Lots of ice just below the hut, as has been all winter long. We met 5 guys at the hut who had just descended Washington, up and back from Ammo; 3 others preceded them. 3 also turned back at the hut, uncomfortable with the wind. Very windy on Monroe, 35-40 mph. 55 mph w/gusts in 60's on Washington in the mid afternoon according to MWOBS. Yet another hike up Ammo this winter, always beautiful. Fun to share in Heather's SSW finish. Congratulations to Heather! |
