Comments
Comments: Soft-pack. Loose surface powder on older packed trail. But well broken. First 2 miles or so are easy grade with a series of small crossings. Used spikes for this section. Take care to stay on center of trail (over monorail) or you will be post-holing to the side (happened to me a couple of times). I put on snowshoes after that when steeper sections appeared, for added traction, for packing power, and for most of all those calf-saving heel-lifts!! It was slow going upon arriving at the steepest sketchiest section (43.98792,-71.44301 to 43.98539,-71.44207) in a hardwood forest where it takes a sharp left crossing over the valley side-hilling with no snowbank on the downhill side. Coming down this section, was slow going, full-body sliding down many parts riding the brakes. At two points I went off the trail and started to slide down the side into the valley but was stopped (hard) by a few trees. Above this section there was some more steepness up to the ridge near Scaur Peak but not sketchy. Then one more steep section on final ascent to North Tri. These 2 sections made for some fun butt-sledding on the way down (but don't attempt on sketchy section!!). Trail between two peaks was broken thanks to 2 others who had made their way to South Peak and back by the time I got to North Peak, although they had lost the trail in a few sections (follow the more traveled path). I had thought about going down Sabbaday but opted for the known rather than the unknown, esp since a fellow I had met on the way up had said that Sabbaday was steeper. So I retraced my steps (falls) and made it back to my car by sundown. Another great day in the Whites!!
