ski trails had been used yesterday so a dusting over packed trail. road was snowmobiled/groomed. broke trail from then on to south twin and galehead through nice new powder. 4-6" down low increasing towards ridge. garfield ridge trail was significantly drifted. climb to south twin had snow up to 12" with the last couple tenths pretty well drifted. frost trail much of the same with a deeper snow base and some drifting in semi open sections. had to do a bit of route finding on the climb to galehead as it was pretty obscure in spots. as of this afternoon at least 5 others have packed the route coming up from little river rd. and doing the loop.
wore snowshoes with extension tails (msr) the whole hike.
real nice day. the new snow made for some work on the ups, but was real fast on the descents. first time getting any views on south twin in winter though i didn't get up there early enough to beat the high clouds that were moving in. winds not quite as strong as i expected, but enough that i didn't hang around on south twins summit too long. great to be out.
