| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
York Pond Road was well plowed, but I was happy I had snow tires on. There was already a truck parked in the York Pond East trailhead lot, so I parked on the side of the road. I was glad I did. The lot itself was a sheet of ice. After I finished, I ended up helping a fellow hiker push his truck out! As I've learned over the years, always check the lots before actually parking! Nothing worse than finishing your hike and finding yourself stuck. |

| Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow/Ice - Postholes |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
All well covered by ice and snow. Some big jumps in the gullies with snowshoes on. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Blazes are terrible/non-existent. With a fresh covering of snow, the trail is very hard to follow. Luckily one person had gone up ahead of me that morning, but I still had to bushwhack/backtrack to find the right way. Be very aware of the trail and keep an eye out for very faint blazes. STRONGLY recommend a map/compass or GSP (which you should always have anyway) for this one in winter. |

| Comments: |
Snow was deep and soft making it slow going. As mentioned above, the upper parts of the Bunnell Notch Trail/Mount Cabot trail are very hard to follow after a fresh snowfall. Blazes along the way are yellow, which you can easily mistake for lichen. Pretty nice views from the top in winter.
Snowshoes here are an absolute must. Wore mine the entire time. I could tell that the person ahead of me had taken his off at one point and did a lot of postholing. |
