 | Comments: |
A no wind day with high clouds. Trail conditions covered most everything. Jewell was a near perfect snowshoe track. Above treeline, switched to Hillsound light crampons. Lots of ice with some exposed rock. Microspikes are a bit skimpy on some of the larger and steeper icy areas. Easy going to Jefferson on Gulfiside. Mt. Clay loop was not so well traveled and the track wandered a lot over crusted drifts. Gulfside adjacent to Great Gulf was very icy as was the trail next to the cog. I opted for the cog ice flow. Crawford path to the Hut is hard crusted snow and ice. A slip without an ice axe handy could send you into the rocks below if you follow the trail. Mt. Monroe loop was sketchy as usual - steep with some ice and drifted snow. I found my own path down to the northeast. The ammo was a minefield of postholes up high. Skiers smoothed it out near the bottom. I donned snowshoes for the bottom flats. |
