Walked Haystack road to the trailhead bareboot. Snowshoes are an absolute requirement on the North Twin trail. As you head up the trail the water crossings are solid but in the next 2 weeks that may change. Use caution. The snow is very deep but only the top 4-6 inches were not packed down. The snow is starting to get soft and will give way underfoot in some spots. You will get hit in the face with small branches on trail. Once on the summit ridge, the snow is very deep and hard packed, If for some reason you do not see human snow tracks along the ridge to the summit, follow the animal tracks as there were many tracks while breaking the summit trail. On the way down the steeps are not steep enough to butt slide but steep enough for the loose snow to give way under you. 8 people took this route on March 2nd so the pack should be good. there are a few spots where blowdowns caused a few small shortcuts to be taken. Please bring a map and or gps to verify the route if there are any tricky spots. There are yellow blazes on trail but there are not very many. |
