Wore snowshoes up Ammo Trail. Lots of barebooters going up who made the trail a lumpy mess. Wear snowshoes or skis or stay home! Trails are still soft.
At the hut, switched to Kahtoola K10 crampons and felt secure. Ice, ice and more ice around the hut. Glad to have crampons and ice axe along the sketchy side slope going up to Washington. Barely any wind at the summit! Coming down Gulfside Trail, there was lots of ice after crossing Cog tracks. Stayed closer to tracks then crossed back on Gulf Side Trail. Stayed in crampons until Jewell Trail. Switched to micro spikes (more rocks exposed and less ice here) until entering woods, where we put on snowshoes for the rest of the journey. Jewell Trail was a pleasant snowshoe path. Low winds and a lovely day above treeline. Started early and stayed ahead of the crowds. |
